The present English version of Die Einphasenasynchronmotoren appears twenty years after the German original was published. The reason for this time-lag is that translations of technical books are very expensive, and the publisher cannot expect a large sale because only a special part of the public is addressed. In the case of the present book, the situation was still worse because the book is very specialized, i.e., deals only with a small segment of electrical machinery and is not available as a general textbook. Certainly, I heard from colleagues with American universities that such a special book was missing in the English technical literature, but nobody was able to recommend a way to translation.

Die Einphasenasynchronmotoren is a unique treatise on the engineering analysis and design of single-phase induction motors, which in vast numbers serve a wide range of applications including pumps, fans, washing machines, refrigerators, kitchen appliances, and innumerable others in the home and factory. While these motors appear simple and inexpensive, and have been a common element in the fabric of civilized society for nearly a hundred years, their internal workings are extremely complex, requiring an extensive mathematical theory even for the most basic design.
